Access your home computer from anywhere

Secure file access to your home PC from any authorized device while on the go.

While lots of our documents, photos, and music can live in the cloud these days, there are still lots of reasons it might be convenient to connect to our home systems while we are away. There are some products that do it, but they aren’t free and they require you to grant a third party access to your home network. Making a hole in your internet firewall is technically possible, but practically very difficult and a huge security risk. With Airwall Teams, not only can you securely connect from your iPad, phone, or laptop without this risk, but it only takes minutes to set up.

What you'll need

Here's what you'll need to set this up with Airwall Teams:
  • An Airwall Teams account
  • A home device – A Windows device you’d like to access remotely.
  • A mobile device – A phone, tablet, or PC to access it from.

Step 1: Build your network

  1. If you haven’t already, go to teams.tempered.io and sign up for an Airwall Teams account.
  2. On your Airwall Teams network, connect your phone, tablet, or other PC to your home PC. For help, see Set up your secure network.
When you're done, it should look like this:Airwall Teams network dashboard showing Home PC and My iPad connected

Step 2: Allow Remote Desktop Access

Once you have the network set up, you need to allow remote access on your Windows computer.

  1. Go to your Windows Settings page, search for “Remote”, and select Remote Desktop settings.
  2. On the Remote Desktop page, toggle Enable Remote Desktop to On.

  3. To access your computer remotely, you'll need to make sure your Windows computer won't go to sleep. On this page, next to Keep my PC awake, select Show settings.
  4. Under Sleep, set it to Never. It is okay to let the screen turn off.

Step 3: Install a Remote Desktop App on your remote device

On the phone, tablet, or PC that you want to use to access your home computer, you need to install a Remote Desktop app (sometimes called RDP clients).

If you are using Windows to access your home PC, Microsoft has built-in RDP support. On other platforms, you can find many RDP clients in the app store. For example, this is how to install Microsoft’s official Remote Desktop Mobile app on an iPad.

Find and install an Remote Desktop app for your device. On an iPad, you can use the Microsoft Remote Desktop Mobile app:

Step 4: Set up your Remote Desktop app

The last step is configuring the Remote Desktop app to connect to your home PC.

  1. Get the Overlay IP address of your Home PC from the Airwall Teams dashboard. In this example, the IP is 10.26.11.2. This IP address is different than the one it gets joining your WiFi network.
Get the Overlay IP for your home PC from the Airwall Teams page
    Note:

This IP address never changes so you can save the IP address in your Remote Desktop app and be ready to connect whenever you need to.

  2. Open the Remote Desktop app and add the IP address to connect to. For example, in the Windows Remote Desktop Mobile app:
    1. Tap +.
Tap the plus sign on the Windows Remote Desktop Mobile app
    2. Add the IP address for your Home PC on your Airwall Teams network:
Enter the Overlap IP from Airwall Teams to the PC name field in the Windows RDP

Log in and start working!

Still in your Remote Desktop app, select the connection you just configured and log in to connect to your Home PC. For example, on the Windows Remote Desktop app:
  1. Tap the tile for the connection you configured:
In the Remote Desktop app, tap the tile for the connection you just configured
  2. Log in to your Home PC account.
Note: You need to use your username and password to log in even if you have your home PC set up to use a PIN or biometrics. If you are using Microsoft login, you’ll need to use your Microsoft.com username and password.
You are now connected to your home PC and can start working.
