Identity-Based Routing with HIPrelay

HIPrelay is a feature available to specific HIPswitch platforms that enable you to dynamically and easily network any device or group of devices across any public, private or hybrid network, including subnets that are located on separate underlays. The HIPrelay brokers connections between HIPservices, based on policies set by the Conductor.

Note: HIPrelay is supported on the HIPswitch 250 Series, HIPswitch 400 Series, virtualized HIPswitches using ESXi or Hyper-V, and cloud HIPswitches running on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or the Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

In the illustration below, two HIPswitches exist in different underlays. Each HIPswitch can connect to the Conductor, publish their IP addresses, and come online. However, communication between the two cannot occur as both HIPswitches do not have publically available IP addresses.

To solve this limitation, we can add a HIPswitch, acting as a HIPrelay. In the Conductor, the HIPrelay acts as a broker between the two HIPswitches.

There are two steps required to set up a HIPrelay:
  1. Enable a HIPservice to act as a HIPrelay.
  2. Add one or more HIPrelay rules.
